Loft Insulation

Without Loft insulation you could be losing 15% of your heating costs. Loft insulation acts like a blanket, trapping heat rising from the house below. Current recommended depth of insulation is 270mm.
Advantages: Loft insulation can be carried out as a DIY task or by a professional installer. There are grants and offers available to help you pay for loft insulation. Many types of material available, rolls of fibreglass, sheeps wool, paper including boards that can be walked on.
Disadvantages: Need to be able to access roof space.
Cost: £500 (DIY £250) Grants are available.
Estimated annual £ saving: £ 110 if no insulation already

If the above 0800 number is no longer being answered, try 0800 512 012 which is the same throughout England & Wales. It routes your call to the nearest Energy Efficiency Centre for where you are calling from.

I didn't use the supplier who Energy Savings Trust nominated because I didn't like the material they were proposing to use. I have seen Knauf Space Blanket at both B&Q and Wickes and Ecowool at B&Q in Sheffield. Space Blanket is glass fibre wrapped in a thin part-silvered outer to reduce problems with loose fibres. It can be rolled back up if you need to do some maintenance on the roof or plumbing in your loft. EcoWool is made of 85% recycled plastic bottles - no loose fibres. I have used both in my loft. Space Blanket comes in 150mm & 200mm thicknesses 5.33m & 4m long respectively. Nominal width is common joist width (370mm I think).
